High Lord or High Lady is the title of the High Fae that rule over the courts of Prythian. There are seven courts, and so, there are seven High Lords. The next High Lord is always chosen by magic and the High Lords have a magical connection to their land and people.

History[]
Beginnings[]
When Prythian was created it was divided into seven Courts: Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, Dawn, Day and Night. To govern each of the Courts, the most powerful High Fae were chosen and after they died, the position would be filled, not by their first-born male but by their most powerful son. For this reason, there were always family disputes for power in the Courts.
After the Treaty with the mortals was signed that prevented the Fae from enslaving them, the King of Hybern's general, Amarantha, moved to Prythian and began touring the Courts. She skillfully managed to strip the High Lords of most of their powers and forced them to live with their Courts in her fortress Under the Mountain for a period of forty-nine years while the High Lord of the Spring Court was to find a human woman who hated the Fae with all her heart but loved him.
The High Lord of the Night Court, Rhysand, told Feyre Archeron that all High Lords had the ability to change into animal forms. In Tamlin's case, he can transform into an animal with the body of a bear and the head of a wolf with antlers. Rhysand can make large wings appear on his back and claws on his hands.
A Court of Thorns and Roses[]
The High Lords and their Courts, with the exception of Tamlin, lived in Under the Mountain, from where they were freed when Feyre completed the trials Amarantha had put on her in to demonstrate her love for Tamlin and she solved a riddle posed by Amarantha. When Tamlin was freed from the curse that fell upon him, he killed Amarantha and her death freed all the other High Lords. In sign of gratitude, they all contributed to making Feyre a High Fae as she was dying from the injuries caused by Amarantha.
A Court of Mist and Fury[]
High Lords are living in their respective Courts and we know the names of most of them. This book introduces the first High Lady in the history of Prythian: Feyre, the High Lady of the Night Court. However, Feyre is not same as the rest of the High Lords, as they have been chosen by magic. She got her title from her husband, Rhysand.
A Court of Wings and Ruin[]
Faced with the impending war against Hybern, Rhysand, the High Lord of Night Court sent letters to all the other High Lords to schedule a meeting.
After several comings and goings, the High Lords agreed to hold the meeting and the event was at Dawn Court Palace, the residence of High Lord of the Dawn Court, since it was the closest place to the Middle. The meeting was attended by the seven High Lords with their delegations and after several discussions and altercations, they agreed to join forces against Hybern, with the exception of the Autumn Court who left after Feyre showed that when they revived her, each of the High Lords gave her a little of their power unknowingly.
They assisted each other, fighting side by side in the final battle against Hybern in the deadly lands of southern Prythian in which they won.

High Lady[]
Circa 15,000 years before the events of the series it was common practice for the mates of High Lords to also be High Ladies. However, they could refuse the position and be consorts instead as Silene refused to be High Lady.[1] At some point, the practice stopped completely until Rhysand made Feyre his High Lady. For this reason, it was believed that the position didn't exist before and Rhysand was the first to implement it.
The position of High Lady presumably does not come with a magical connection to the land, as Feyre is not chosen by the magic of Prythian.
