History[]

Long before Feyre Archeron entered Prythian, Clotho was injured badly by a group of males. They cut out her tongue, and smashed her hand for entertainment and to ensure that Clotho couldn't inform anyone about who hurt her. They further healed her while hurting her to ensure that the damage was permanent.

She was later found by Morrigan, who brought her to meet Rhysand, the High Lord of the Night Court. Rhys allowed Mor to hunt the males, and presumably kill them. After this, Mor stayed in the library with Clotho and helped her to heal. Though due to the nature of the injuries inflicted, her hand was healed a little, but most of the damage was permanent. Due to this, Clotho is incapable of speech.

A Court of Wings and Ruin[]

Feyre and Rhysand visit the library in Velaris to gain information on how to repair the Wall. Clotho greets the pair and leads them into the library, and to a reading area. She leaves them in the library to search for information.

Clotho aides Feyre by searching for information in the later weeks. Later, Nesta Archeron and Feyre browse the library and are attacked by the King of Hybern's Ravens. Clotho rings the spelled bell inside the library to alert other Night Court citizens about the threat. In response to the warning, Cassian enters the library to help Feyre and Nesta.

Appearance[]

Clotho is slim in appearance. While meeting Feyre, she wears pale robes and a hood with a crown of limpid blue stones, identifying her as a High Priestess. Clotho's hands are permanently damaged. Her bones are bent and knobbed and her fingers are at the wrong angles.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Magic: Like many faeries, Clotho is capable of magic. Due to her scarred hands, she uses this magic to levitate and move books at will, something she would find difficult by hand. Clotho uses her magic to communicate by writing her thoughts on paper.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Clotho was one of the three Fates or Moirai. The Fates were incarnations of destiny and life. Clotho was the deity who spun the thread of the lives of all mortals, and the individual who decided when a person would be born or killed.
  • Clotho's mutilation- the removal of her tongue and crushing of her hands- is likely a reference to Lavinia's torment in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, where the lead character's only daughter is assaulted and then brutalized by removing her tongue and hands to prevent her from telling anyone who attacked her. Thankfully Clotho does not share Lavinia's fate, as instead of being killed to preserve family honor, she is brought to a safe place and given a new life after her assault.
