Azriel's Bonus Chapter is a bonus scene found in the Books-A-Million edition of A Court of Silver Flames. It is told in Azriel's point-of-view.
Plot Summary[]
Azriel finds himself lingering in the River House after the Winter Solstice celebration. Despite the festivities, sleep eludes him, his mind troubled by envy and longing, particularly as he contemplates Cassian's happiness with Nesta. Seeking solace, he remains downstairs until he encounters Elain, who comes to give him a small, thoughtful gift—a pair of earplugs to help with the noise at the House of Wind, now that Cassian and Nesta live there.
As they exchange gifts, the atmosphere grows tense and charged with unspoken feelings. Azriel offers Elain a delicate stained-glass rose necklace, which she asks him to put on her. The simple gesture escalates into a moment of intimacy as he struggles with his desire, knowing it’s forbidden due to Elain’s bond with Lucien. Just before their lips meet, Rhysand intervenes with a telepathic command, pulling Azriel away and summoning him to his study.
Rhys confronts Azriel, warning him to stay away from Elain and emphasizing the political and personal consequences of pursuing her. Rhys points out the danger of triggering a Blood Duel with Lucien, which could shatter alliances and cause greater conflict. Azriel, though seething with frustration and longing, leaves to clear his head.
Conflicted and upset, Azriel retreats to the House of Wind, where he runs into Gwyn practicing in the training ring. They exchange a few words, and Azriel prompts Gwyn to show him her technique for cutting the ribbon. Azriel’s shadows react differently around Gwyn than they do with others; they seem to calm and recede, which surprises him. The scene ends with Azriel wishing her a Happy Solstice and advising her not to stay out much longer, or else she might freeze, to which Gwyn responds with a friendly nod in farewell.
In a moment of introspection, Azriel descends the stairwell of the House of Wind, accompanied by what he believes to be the faint sound of beautiful singing from his shadows. After a restless night, he returns to the River House to collect his belongings before dawn and discovers the necklace belonging to Elain among his gifts. Though initially intending to return it to the shop in the Palace of Thread and Jewels, Azriel instead heads to the library, where he encounters Clotho.
He discreetly asks Clotho to deliver the necklace to Gwyn, requesting that she not reveal its origin, instead suggesting it be presented as a gift from Rhys. Despite his intentions, Azriel grapples with his emotions. Clotho sees through his facade and acknowledges his sadness, prompting him to consider Gwyn’s appreciation for the gift.
Azriel agrees to let Clotho give the necklace to Gwyn, feeling a spark of joy at the thought of her reaction. As he ascends the stairs back to the main house, he envisions Gwyn’s teal eyes lighting up at the sight of the necklace, a secret hope blooming within him. He consciously suppresses this thought, choosing to bury the tender image deep within himself, yet it lingers as a quiet, beautiful secret.
