The Autumn Court is one of the seven courts of Prythian, and a Seasonal Court. It is known to be beautiful, cutthroat, and highly competitive, a court of foxes. The High Lord of Autumn, Beron Vanserra, is gifted with the power of fire and is known to be the oldest and the cruelest of all the High Lords. He rules the Autumn Court with his wife the Lady of the Autumn Court and his four living sons.
Eris Vanserra, the eldest child of Beron and his wife, hopes to kill his father and take the throne.
Five hundred years ago, Eris, the heir to the Autumn Court, was engaged to be married to Morrigan of the Night Court. However, when he discovered that Morrigan had lost her virginity to an Illyrian warrior (Cassian) he refused the marriage. Mor was left on the border of the Autumn Court, naked with a note nailed to her womb saying that she was Eris' problem. Eris left her there alone, and during the events of A Court of Wings and Ruins, Eris confessed that he would never have touched Mor and he knew she didn't want to marry him so he gave her a way out.
Beron and his wife originally had seven sons: Lucien, Eris, and five other unnamed sons. However, Lucien fell in love with Jesminda, a Lesser Fae deemed unworthy by Beron who had her executed in front of Lucien while his brothers held him powerless and forced him to watch. Eris wasn't there, and this was the first and last time he disobeyed his father. Afterward, Lucien abandoned his title and left the Autumn Court. Three of his brothers saw this as an opportunity to rid themselves of a rival to the throne and followed him, but they were thwarted when Tamlin arrived, warned by Eris. Two of the brothers were killed, one by Lucien and one by Tamlin. The third returned home and rejoined his family.
The woods of the Autumn Court look like a jewelry box, a latticework of red, gold, brown, and green. The colors are so vivid that it's hard not to gawk and gape. Surrounding the forests of the Autumn Court are farmlands and fields, inhabited by the lesser Fae who work the land. It is a land of fertile valleys and jade streams that end in steep foothills that leaped into gray, snowcapped mountains that marked the start of the shared range with the Winter Court. The west is the Summer Court, while to the south is the Spring Court.
The Forest House is the residence of the High Lord of the Autumn Court. It's located at the center of the Autumn Court is a sprawling complex, and has been built in and around the trees and rocks, with only its uppermost levels visible above the ground. Below, it tunnels a few levels into the stone. Its sprawl generates its size; it is possible to walk from one end of the House to the other, though it would take half the morning. There are layers and circles of sentries ringing it; in the trees, on the ground, atop the moss-coated shingles, and the stones of the House itself. No enemies approached Beron’s home without his knowledge. None left without his permission.
- Beron is known to pay his farmers very poorly and so they are desperate for any extra wealth or favor they can receive.
- Due to Lucien being the son of Helion rather than Beron, Beron technically only has four true-born sons remaining.
- The Autumn Court chooses its High Lords based on their strength, not by who is the eldest.
