A Court of Thorns and Roses series is a series of books by Sarah J. Maas which retells multiple fairy tales including The Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone with faerie lore.

It was most likely inspired by the so-called "first Scottish fairytale", The Border ballad. This ballad tells the tale of Tam Lin, a knight who gets captured by the queen of fairies while hunting.

The trilogy focuses on the tale of Feyre, as she is brought into the faerie lands of Prythian, after murdering a faerie.

On 11 November 2015, it was announced that Tempo Productions have optioned A Court of Thorns and Roses for film.

On the 12 July 2016, Entertainment Weekly announced that Sarah J. Maas is writing five new books for the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, not including the first three novels of the series. There will also be a coloring book, which will release in 2017. Two novellas will also be published, along with three novels which will be set before and after the first three books. [1] [2]

Trivia

  • The books are set in the same megaverse as the Throne of Glass series. Sarah J. Maas states you could open a wyrdgate between both worlds. [3] [4]
"[H]onestly, I imagine the ACOTAR & TOG worlds existing in the same megaverse. Maybe I'll write my own fanfic, where Celaena opens a portal and falls into Feyre's world. (...and thus reach an all-time low of author lameness.)"
— Sarah J. Maas on the ACOTAR and Throne of Glass world[4]
